Important to Know About Getting Married in Denmark

Who Can Get Married

  • In Denmark, marriage is open to couples of any orientation – both heterosexual and LGBTQ+.
  • The minimum legal age for marriage is 18 years.
  • If one of the partners has been previously married, the marriage must be officially dissolved (a divorce decree or death certificate of the spouse is required).

Required Documents

The list of documents depends on your situation, but most often the following are required:

  • A valid passport or ID card.
  • Visa or residence permit (if required by law).
  • Divorce decree or death certificate of the spouse (if previously married).
  • In some cases – a certificate of residence.
  • If documents are not in English, German, or Danish, a certified translation is required.
  • In certain cases – an apostille or other form of legalization.

How the Process Works

  • You send us the application form and scans of your documents.
  • We check everything and submit the documents to the Danish Agency of Family Law.
  • You receive approval and the so-called Prøvelsesattest (Certificate of Marital Status).
  • We agree together on the date and place of the ceremony.
  • On the appointed day, you arrive at the Town Hall and go through the registration.
  • You receive an international marriage certificate.
